Dogs - Does Man's Best Friend Make the Best Pet

Dogs make wonderful pets for all types of families whether it is for bachelors, honeymooners, families with young children or even retired couples. There are numerous types of dog breeds each with their own specific appearance, size, characteristics and longevity range.

Dogs are commonly referred to as a "man's best friend" and it is easy to see why. They require a lot of attention from their owners, sometimes even as much as children but this attention will always be rewarded with loyalty and companionship. Dogs love to follow commands and are thus easy to train if they are taught properly and from a young age.

Since there are so many types of dogs available it is essential that the right type of dog is chosen for the right type of family, a poodle might not be the perfect choice of dog for a bachelor who enjoys jogging and being outdoors. Similarly, a Pit bull might not be the perfect choice for a family with infants or toddlers running around.

In general there are several types of dog breeds that are known to make excellent family dogs. These dogs include, Labradors, Retrievers, Collie dogs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Newfoundland's and Pugs. In order to keep your dog healthy it is important that they receive optimal nutrition, plenty of attention and sufficient exercise. Some dogs require less exercise than others, but it is important not to let your dog become obese.

One thing people have to consider before getting a dog is that they do bark. For normal households this might not be a problem, but if you are living in a highly built up area where your neighbours are in very close proximity to you, you might have to carefully consider a breed that does not bark excessively. In many instances, people decide to get a dog because they bark, so that they can serve as a guard dog to ward off potential intruders.
